]]>Music in Spanish, including those over age 50, was associated with higher rates of happiness and good cognitive function. Adults with no early music exposure but currently engage in some music appreciation video above-average mental well-being scores.
Those are pretty inspiring results, to be sure. However, this 20-minute online survey has some confines. For one, it involved 3,185 US adults ages 18 and older; that is a small amount if you are inferring to 328 million people across the country. For another, it is a survey of people’s opinions. For example, although people might portray their brain health as “excellent,” there was no impartial measure of brain well-being such as an MRI scan or even a test to measure their cognition.
Lastly, even if the ratings were accurate, the findings are only correlations. They do not prove that, for example, exposure to music as a child led to one’s better ability to learn new things. It may be similarly likely that those children brought up in more affluent households were more likely to be exposed to music and be given a good education that quickly led to their learning new belongings later stages in life.
But let’s suppose that the results of the AARP survey are indeed actual. How can music have such inspiring brain effects? Though we don’t know the responses for sure, expansions in reasoning neuroscience over the last few years have permitted us to speculate on some possible mechanisms.
